The Casino de Mont-Tremblant: A Beneficial Project for the Region

This past April 13, accompanied by the Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade, Mr. Raymond Bachand, I had the pleasure of announcing that the Government of Québec has authorized us to establish a new Casino, and as such, that Loto-Québec would be opening the doors of its fourth gaming house as of the summer tourist season of 2009. This new facility will be set on the Versant Soleil of the Mont-Tremblant international tourist resort in place of the Ludoplex that had originally been planned. The new Casino will offer an interesting variety of games designed to appeal to the particular clientele that frequents the Mont-Tremblant resort.
Following in the footsteps of the province’s three existing gaming houses, the Casino de Mont-Tremblant will devote particular attention to the beauty and quality of its site, to customer service, and to the security of its environment. This prestigious establishment will serve as an additional entertainment venue for vacationers and conference-goers, while contributing to the diversification of tourism offerings in the region and attracting a new clientele to the Laurentians.
I would like to take this opportunity to point out that, even with the establishment of this fourth Casino, the overall level of game offerings in Québec will not increase. On the contrary, they will diminish. In actual fact, the withdrawal of video lottery terminals called for in our 2004-2007 Development Plan is being maintained, and the 300 VLTs that were to be installed at the planned Mont-Tremblant gaming centre will not be redeployed. There currently remain 11 sites in the Mont-Tremblant region whose terminals are targeted for removal by the time the Casino officially opens its doors.
In sum, of all the VLTs withdrawn across the province, a total of 1,030 will be removed from the network, as opposed to the 730 originally envisaged. As such, taking all the withdrawal programs implemented by Loto-Québec since 2004 into account, there will ultimately be a 34% reduction in the number of VLT sites in Québec, or 3% more than originally anticipated. I would also like to underline the fact that we will be instituting the same preventive and awareness measures at Versant Soleil as those in place at the other Casinos in Québec.
We are firmly committed to successfully realizing this project, while actively participating in the enhancement of tourism offerings at Mont-Tremblant, and as a consequence, in the development of the region’s economy.

Loto-Québec Honoured at the Gala de reconnaissance en environnement et développement durable de Montréal

This past April 3 marked the second edition of the Gala de reconnaissance en environnement et développement durable de Montréal. For the occasion, Loto-Québec had submitted a project entitled Organizing Events With Respect for the Principles of Eco-Responsibility to the jury, and the project earned top honours in the “Companies and Industries” category — one of the four official categories of the competition. For the second consecutive year, this Gala showcased the most original initiatives taken by Montréal organizations committed to assuring sustainable development within the community at large.
- a guide for the organization of eco-responsible internal events
- additional tools, such as information documents
- a training program offered in fall 2007 to all Loto-Québec corporate and business units, with more than 100 employees having participated in one of the 18 sessions held
- an evaluation grid designed to measure results
Moreover, the Corporation undertook a number of initiatives aimed at reducing the ecological impact on the site of its sponsored events. At the same time, a concerted effort has been made to sensitize festival and event organizers to the importance of adopting a similar approach. Furthermore, Loto-Québec established a partnership with the Écho-Logique Consortium, a group specialized in the ecological management of residual materials on the site of public events. As well, the Corporation’s participation on the advisory committee of a project for the certification of eco-responsible event management served as a major source of support for the introduction of other initiatives promoting responsible practices within the organization. This certification is currently under development by the Bureau de normalisation du Québec further to an initiative launched by the Réseau québécois des femmes en environnement.

Moliflor Loisirs Becomes JOAGROUPE

Co-owned by Loto-Québec’s Casino Mundial subsidiary, major French casino operator Moliflor Loisirs recently decided to modify its business strategy, and in so doing, to change its name. As such, the Group is now known as JOAGROUPE (in French only), and its 20 or so casinos have been renamed JOACASINOS.
JOAGROUPE plans to make its mark within the French gaming market by having its establishments adopt an original approach to entertainment and conviviality that will set them apart from conventional practice within the sector.
